By nature, I am a helper. I love helping people take complex ideas and set them in motion. I’ve spent more than 20 years working in technology and music, and have dedicated my career and education to the pursuit of understanding the ways in which they intertwine. Whether it’s education on a new piece of gear or a home studio install, I have the knowledge and connections to find the answers you need.
I live and breathe music and technology. I am the son of two music teachers who instilled a deep life-long passion for any sequences of sounds strung together. I started piano when I was two years old, and through the years picked up vocals, trombone, guitar and finally settling on bass. In high school, my dad pulled some dusty cases out of the equipment storage at the high school and introduced me to the ARP Odyssey. Combined with my interest in computers, it really got me thinking about how technology influences music. Before long, I was clipping 8-bit audio samples and programming songs using Impulse Tracker. Taking this newfound combined interest to Boston, I went to Berklee College of Music as a Music Synthesis major (now called Electronic Production and Design). While there, I had the ability to experience the sheer multitude of options for electronic music and recording equipment. Wanting to take this knowledge deeper, I moved on to electronics school to understand why that equipment did what it did.
Which leads me to my technology background…
I started working with computers and electronics as a kid. My first big accomplishment was configuring MS-DOS to use expanded memory to play Doom… quite the motivator! We’ve come such a long way! Over the years, I have amassed a knowledgebase to include technical support, networking, server administration, telecom, web design, electronics/audio repair, and all the spaces in between. Having an understanding of these technologies is increasingly important, as music software and equipment are now using many of these same technologies. Some things to consider:
- Do you have a backup plan for your recording sessions or the config files you use for your digital pedal or console? Not only is this absolutely necessary in the event of a disaster or hardware failure, the increasing threat of ransomware could potentially hold your material hostage.
- Thinking of getting a digital mixer and controlling it with a tablet? You’ll need a WiFi router, and you’ll want to make sure it is locked down so no one can hack your mix. There are also big considerations to make considering other wireless devices like in-ear monitors or wireless guitar/microphone systems.
- How much internet bandwidth will you need to stream your show?
